Greatest Snow on Earth

Skiing and Snowboarding options

The unusual weather conditions along the Wasatch Range create the best snow in the world for skiing and snowboarding (as well as other snow sports). As you might expect, our area has a number of renowned ski resorts designed to take advantage of these conditions.

Little Cottonwood

Little Cottonwood Canyon is home to Alta Ski Area and Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.

Alta is known for it's classic powder skiing. It is a pure and unapologetic downhill ski area, and snowboarding is not allowed. The ski area covers over 2,600 acres. Elevation starts at 8,530 feet and tops out at 11,068 feet. Vertical drop is over 2,500 feet.

Snowbird is a more contemporary ski resort. Both skiers and snowboarders are welcome. The resort covers 4,700 acres, with 2,500 skiable acres. Elevation ranges from 7,759 feet to over 11,000 feet. Vertical drop is over 3,000 feet.

Alta and Snowbird receive over 500 inches of snow during a typical season. Occasionally, skiing is still an option in early July.

Big Cottonwood

Big Cottonwood Canyon has two ski resorts: Brighton Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort.

Brighton is anything but flashy. It's a traditional ski resort that caters to families. Skiing and snowboarding are allowed. The resort has 1,050 skiable acres. Base elevation is 8,755 feet, and top elevation is 10,500 feet. Vertical drop is 1,875 feet.

Solitude is a relaxed, laid-back resort. Skiiers and snowboarders are welcome. Elevation ranges from 7,994 feet to 10,488 feet. Vertical drop is 2,494 feet.

Big Cottonwood's ski resorts typically get over 500 inches of snow per year.

Sundance

Sundance Mountain Resort (Sundance Resort) is located high above Provo Canyon.

It is similar to Brighton in that it is a traditional, family-friendly resort. Skiers and snowboarders are welcome. Base elevation is 6,100 feet. The summit is 8,250 feet. Vertical drop is 2,150 feet. Around 20% of the trails are beginner ski trails, 40% are intermediate trails, and 40% are advanced trails.

Note that, because of Sundance's lower elevation relative to the Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood resorts, Sundance has a shorter ski season than the Cottonwood ski areas.
